How much collagen is in one scoop?
You get 10g of collagen peptides and 9g of protein in every scoop. The unflavored tub has one ingredient, pasture fed bovine collagen peptides, so the whole scoop is collagen.
The Strawberry Daiquiri scoop is a little bigger, 12.45g, because it also carries natural flavors, citric acid, stevia and monk fruit. It still holds the same 10g of collagen, with 0g of sugar.
The label range is 1 to 2 scoops a day, or 10 to 20g of collagen. One scoop meets or beats the daily dose in the skin, nail and joint trials below.
How is collagen hydrolyzed?
Collagen is hydrolyzed by cutting it apart with enzymes until the long protein turns into small pieces called peptides. Whole collagen is a tight triple strand, and in that form it does not dissolve well in a drink.
In general, makers break that strand open with an acid or alkaline step and heat, then add enzymes at a set temperature to snip it into short peptides. A 2019 review in the journal Molecules describes this process for collagen from cattle, pigs and fish.
Those short peptides are why a hydrolyzed powder stirs into hot coffee or a cold shake without clumping or setting like gelatin.
Hydrolyzed collagen vs collagen peptides
If you are comparing labels, hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptides are the same thing. Both names mean collagen broken down into small peptides, and you will also see it called collagen hydrolysate.
So the name on the tub tells you nothing about quality. What does tell you something is the grams of collagen per scoop, the collagen types and the source animal. Ours lists all three: 10g, Type I and Type III, grass fed bovine.
Is hydrolyzed collagen good for skin?
Yes, in small placebo controlled trials, if you take it daily for at least 8 weeks. Your skin is built mostly on Type I collagen, and the trials tested whether peptides from a daily scoop show up as firmer, smoother skin.
In a 2014 trial of 69 women aged 35 to 55, 2.5g or 5g of collagen peptides a day improved skin elasticity over placebo after 8 weeks. In a second 2014 trial of 114 women, 2.5g a day left eye wrinkle volume 20% lower than placebo. Skin samples from that trial held 65% more procollagen type I, the building block of new collagen, and 18% more elastin.
Be realistic about what this shows. The trials were small, 8 weeks long and done in women, and skin moisture did not change enough to count in the first one. One scoop of ours is 10g, more than either trial used.
Hydrolyzed bovine collagen benefits
If you are weighing a bovine collagen powder, the benefits studied are for collagen peptides: skin, nails, joints and muscle alongside strength training. Bovine simply means the collagen comes from cattle, and once it is hydrolyzed it is collagen peptides like any other source.
In the trials in the table below, 2.5g a day grew nails 12% faster over 24 weeks, and 10g a day eased joint pain in athletes over 24 weeks. With strength training, 15g a day added more fat free mass than placebo over 12 weeks. Those published summaries do not say which animal the collagen came from, so read them as collagen peptide results.
Where bovine collagen differs is the type mix. Ours is Type I and Type III, from grass fed, pasture fed cattle. The trials were small, 25 to 147 people each, and results took 8 to 24 weeks of daily use.
How much collagen per day, by goal
If you take collagen for a reason, match your dose to the one studied for it. Each row is one published trial of collagen peptides, with the daily dose and how long people took it.
| Goal | Daily dose studied | How long | What the trial found | Source |
| Skin elasticity | 2.5g or 5g | 8 weeks | Skin elasticity improved over placebo, 69 women aged 35 to 55 | Proksch 2014a, Skin Pharmacology and Physiology |
| Wrinkles | 2.5g | 8 weeks | Eye wrinkle volume 20% lower than placebo, 114 women aged 45 to 65 | Proksch 2014b, Skin Pharmacology and Physiology |
| Nails | 2.5g | 24 weeks | Nail growth up 12%, broken nails down 42%, 25 people, no placebo group | Hexsel 2017, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology |
| Knees during sport | 5g | 12 weeks | Less knee discomfort during activity than placebo, 139 athletes | Zdzieblik 2017, Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism |
| Joints in athletes | 10g | 24 weeks | Less joint pain walking, standing and at rest than placebo, 97 athletes analyzed | Clark 2008, Current Medical Research and Opinion |
| Muscle with strength training | 15g | 12 weeks | 4.2kg of fat free mass gained against 2.9kg on placebo, 53 men in their 70s | Zdzieblik 2015, British Journal of Nutrition |
In scoops: one scoop (10g) meets or beats the dose in the skin, nail, knee and joint trials. One and a half scoops matches the 15g used with strength training.

These trials are small, 25 to 147 people each, and each one tested its own collagen peptide formula. Results showed up after 8 to 24 weeks of daily use, not overnight. For more on dosing, read how much collagen per day the research supports.
Type I and Type III collagen
You will see collagen types on almost every label, and they tell you where in the body that collagen is most common. Type I is the main collagen in skin, bone and tendons. Type III is found alongside Type I in skin and blood vessels.
Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides is a Type I and Type III blend from grass fed, pasture fed bovine. Both flavors carry the same blend, so you get the same collagen whichever tub you pick.
Bovine vs marine collagen
If you are choosing between bovine and marine collagen, the main differences are the animal and the collagen types. Both are hydrolyzed into small peptides the same basic way.
Marine collagen comes from fish skin, scales and bones, and fish skin is used mainly to get Type I collagen, according to a 2020 review in the journal Materials. Bovine collagen comes from cattle. Ours is a Type I and Type III blend. If you avoid beef, marine collagen is the one to look at.
| Measure | Bovine collagen | Marine collagen |
| Comes from | Cattle | Fish skin, scales and bones |
| Collagen types | Ours: Type I and Type III | Mainly Type I |
| How it is hydrolyzed | Enzymes break it into peptides | Enzymes break it into peptides |
| Good fit if | You want Type I and III in one scoop | You avoid beef |

What does grass fed collagen mean?
Grass fed collagen means collagen from cattle raised on grass and forage rather than grain. The term is about how the animals were raised, not about the collagen itself.
On beef labels, the USDA meat labeling guidance uses grass fed for cattle fed grass and forage after weaning. That guidance is written for meat, and a collagen label is not reviewed the same way.
Here is what our label says: Pasture Fed Collagen Peptides (Bovine), sold as grass fed. The collagen trials on this page did not compare grass fed with conventional collagen, so grass fed is a sourcing choice, not a proven difference in results. For more on the term, read grass fed vs regular protein.
Hydrolyzed collagen vs gelatin
If you have ever stirred gelatin into something cold, you know it sets. Gelatin is collagen broken down only part of the way. Hydrolyzed collagen is broken down further into peptides, so it dissolves in hot or cold liquid and stays liquid.
That is the practical difference. Gelatin is for gummies and cooking. Collagen peptides are for your coffee, a smoothie or a glass of water. Here is how to get it right when you are adding collagen to coffee.
| Measure | Hydrolyzed collagen peptides | Gelatin |
| What it is | Collagen broken down into small peptides | Collagen partly broken down |
| In cold liquid | Dissolves | Sets into a gel |
| In hot liquid | Dissolves and stays liquid | Dissolves, then gels as it cools |
| Best for | Coffee, shakes, water | Gummies, desserts, cooking |
Collagen peptides vs whey protein
If you already drink a protein shake, you may wonder whether collagen can replace it. It cannot, and it is not meant to. Collagen is not a complete protein, so it works alongside a whey or plant protein rather than in place of one.
Whey is a complete protein. Collagen is the one studied for skin, nails and joints. An easy routine is a scoop of collagen in your morning coffee and a whey protein isolate shake after training.

When to take collagen
You can take collagen any time of day, so pick a time you will not forget. Mix 1 to 2 scoops daily with 6 to 8 oz of water or your beverage of choice.
What mattered in the research was daily use over weeks. The skin trials ran 8 weeks and the athletes' joint trial ran 24. In the strength training trial, the men took their collagen after training.
Unflavored stirs into coffee, smoothies and protein shakes. For the Strawberry Daiquiri Refresher, mix with cold water, or add one scoop to sparkling water over ice.
